Why Stanley had muliple Patents
Why Stanley had multiple Patents. Some people believe Stan wasn't done with his invention and was updating it when he made multiple patents. But the truth is he was done and had found what worked. He had found what worked and was making sure nobody could come in and take his invention and change one thing in it and claim it has their own so he was closing the market on doing it his way. He had lectures that he says why he had multiple patents. He was already satisfied with what he had and he was protecting his patents by changing it and getting a patent on every way possible doing it his way.

Good strategy business wise, good for us in which we benefit from the different ways of considering his work.
In a way his death I think actually makes his patents open source. That's only a guess, any idea who has legal right to his patents today?

Most patents are only good for seven years then others have the right to infringe on it if the patent isn't renewed.

I heard seven years. Might want to look it up. I have been known to be wrong.

How long is a patent good for?
A utility patent is valid for 20 years following the filing date. However, a good intellectual property management technique is to periodically develop and patent improvements which can extend the effective life of the invention. Even if the original patents expire and a competitor can make the original invention, it is unlikely to gain a market share against the improved version. Sometimes even small improvements are enough to ensure a product's dominance.

Found this online. quick answer.
"Under recent changes in the laws, in the United States patents are now granted for a term of 20 years from the date of application (14 years for design patents). Different rules apply for patents covered by applications filed before June 8, 1995. Patents may be extended only by a special act of Congress (except for certain pharmaceutical patents).
After expiration of the term of the patent, the person holding the patent loses the right to exclude others from utilizing the invention, so that anyone can go ahead and make use of the invention without permission of the patent holder."

Re: Why Stanley had muliple Patents
its interesting well, it seems that some of Stan's patents are valid for a few more years. I wonder who owns them.

This again is why Stan meyrs had many patents. He did so, so other couldn't change one thing and be able to call it their own. He was protecting his patent so other couldn't infringe on his invention. So many loop holds can cause others to take somebody' else invention and call it theirs
Stanley was making sure no one else could do that with his invention
